A scanned PDF is just a set of pictures: you can't search it, select a sentence or copy text out of it. Upload one or more scanned PDF files and this tool recognises the text on every page (OCR) and adds it as an invisible layer exactly over the words on the page. The pages look the same as before, but now you can search with Ctrl+F, select and copy text, and the document can be found by its content.

Recognition supports 30 languages and works best with clear scans of at least 200–300 dpi. Pages that already contain text are skipped, so mixed documents are handled correctly. Files are kept for 48 hours and then deleted automatically — or you can delete them yourself at any time.

What does OCR do to my PDF?

OCR (optical character recognition) reads the text in the page images and adds it to the PDF as an invisible text layer. The scanned pages themselves are not changed, so the document looks the same but becomes searchable and selectable.

Which languages are supported?

30 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Select every language that appears in the document for the best results.

How accurate is the recognition?

On clear, straight scans of printed text it is very accurate. Low resolution, blurry or skewed scans, handwriting and unusual fonts reduce the accuracy.

Is my file kept private?

Files are transferred over an encrypted connection and processed on our server. Uploaded files and results are stored for 48 hours, so you can download the result via its link, and are then deleted automatically. You can delete them yourself at any time with the delete button in the “Your files” list.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes, uploaded PDF files must be 1 GB or smaller.
